2025 annual gathering of the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) started on 14th July at UN Headquarters in New York. It is coming to an end today: on 23rd July. That end may prove to be beginning of deep thoughts: Do the pledges produce results? Is the political process of setting the goals is at fault or it is just that the whole game of implementation has loose ends?
Convened under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council of the UN (ECOSOC), HLPF-2025 has broad theme of: “Advancing sustainable, inclusive, science- and evidence-based solutions for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals for leaving no one behind.” 2025-HLPF was expected to take an in-depth look at presentation by 37 countries who would present their Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs).
Ten years after the adoption of 2030-Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals, the multilateral system of UN is facing many challenges, including ongoing conflicts, the global economy, trade, and climate change. In addition, many are concerned about the impact of the current US government’s distancing itself from several UN-mediated global targets and programmes, directly affecting the implementation of several SDGs and net zero target of the Paris Climate Agreement.
2025 is also 80th anniversary of establishment of United Nations. At this juncture what I recall is Summit of the Future held by UN in 2024. It produced ‘Pact for the Future, and related Global Digital Compact and Declaration on Future Generations’. That pact gives us the ray of hope, simply because it talks about youth and future generation. Skilling the youth for SDGs and Net Zero is the mission of Green TERRE Foundation.END
