SDG Stories in Campus Sustainability

The Campus of MPKV Rahuri is taken up as a project for sustainability by stakeholders and others to be engaged in various activities such as waste management, vermicomposting, afforestation, irrigation and watershed development.

Region

MPKV Campus at Rahuri village in Ahmednagar District, in Maharashtra, India

Description

Every Friday all the officers, employees and students voluntarily clean university campus. Collected decomposable waste and farm residues are used for the preparation of compost. More than 100 compost pits were prepared for composting with 400 metric ton compost production potential. The campus is also kept plastic free with minimum use of plastic and reuse of collected plastic waste for the road making.

Commercial Vermicompost unit at University dairy farm and 22 low cost vermicompost unit at central farm block were prepared. The production potential is 3 metric ton of vermicompost per day. The vermicompost is used on university farm for improving soil health as well as it is made available to the farmers at reasonable price.

From last 3 years, university has undertaken massive afforestation activity in university campus. Plantlets of different tree species are planted, out of which 75 % are survived. More than 100 honey bee boxes are kept in university campus which ultimately benefits for the pollination in seed production plot.

Creation of Farm ponds on campus is initiated in a long way. The stored water is used pressurize irrigation as well as protective irrigation purpose so as to improve the water use efficiency.

Initiated Watershed Development Project on 450 ha area of university barren land to improve water storage capacity, minimize soil loss and increase vegetative cover.

Status of the project

TERRE has also recently signed an official MOU with Gulf Organization of Research and Development (GORD) at Qatar Science and Technology Park for the initiative of 'Climate Neutral Campus". Campus Sustainability Reports have now been published under SCCN by the universities.
