Sustainable Campus, Green Campus - IIT Delhi 

The Key technology campuses in India have always been the harbingers of new technology and innovations in India. From colour TV, to computers and to Bio Sciences, India has witnessed a drive initiated by these growth engines. India is witnessing a demographic dividend and by next 3 years, India will have the highest working age population. This potential needs to be utilised efficiently to see visible transformation in the country. Educational Campuses are the hot beds of talent and in lesser time, more minds can be influenced.

IIT Delhi's Sustainable Campus Initiative:

Sustainable IIT Delhi brings together people across the institute with a vision for a more sustainable, self-sufficient and green campus.

The ignited minds at the IIT Delhi campus have committed themselves to the following Vision and Mission Statement:

Vision:

To make IIT Delhi campus greener, sustainable and self-sufficient and to minimize the impact on the environment.

To ensure a green and healthy environment for people living within the campus.

Mission:

To identify various environment problems around the campus and address them through the most effective solutions.

To encourage research in green technology.

To make IIT Delhi community aware about the various environment problems around and to encourage them to practice sustainable lifestyle.

Sustainable IIT Delhi involves the following activities:

Campus Projects

Street LEDs - Halogen lamps are being replaced with LEDs. On an average for a 12 hours consumption of 43.2 KWH, annual saving of INR 1.5 lakhs is achieved.

Air conditioning - Replacement of around 300 old ACs with new 1.5 Tr. ACs

Energy saved per AC per day for an operation of 10 Hrs. = 10.3 KWH

Total savings per annum for 300 new ACs = INR. 50 Lakhs.

Solar Panel Installations - A 20 KW solar power system is already ordered and another 1 MW solar installation is in the planning which will amount to savings of INR 2.16 Lakhs per annum

Water - Waterless type urinals are being introduced and so far 200 litres of water per day per toilet is saved. More details can be read here.

Waste Treatment - Design and Development of solutions for solid waste management.

Student Initiatives

This initiative involves Nature Walk, Biodiversity Audit of the campus and arranging for car pooling.

Awareness Events

Policy makers have realised that to solve the environmental issues, education the masses and urging them for participation is a must. IIT Delhi has many courses to create this level of

awareness and the details of the courses can be found here.

Faculty and students actively engage in forum discussions and debates to ideate on multiple fronts related to sustainable activities in the campus.

Sustainable IIT Delhi acts as a bridge between the faculty and students and provides a common platform to share sustainable campus ideas through research and innovation. This model is a bench mark for any campus to set foot towards sustainability. It is through such initiatives and dialogues; the real idea of "Sustainable Living" is imbibed in the young minds.
