Pledge for Carbon Neutral Campus

Not Zero-Net Zero

What is Not Zero-Net Zero?

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) defines Carbon Neutrality as: "anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions are offset by an equal number of emissions reduced, avoided, or sequestered within a given time horizon." The need for carbon neutrality is significant in meeting the Paris Agreement targets.

The ‘Not-Zero Net-Zero’ initiative by the ‘Smart Campus Cloud Network’ aims to achieve carbon neutrality within educational campuses. On the occasion of the 5th Anniversary of the Paris Climate Agreement held on 12th December 2020, Green TERRE Foundation - SCCN, in collaboration with UNESCO and AICTE launched an initiative ‘Not Zero - Net Zero’ Pledge for Carbon Neutral Educational Institutes. On the day, Vice-Chancellors of 12 leading educational institutions took a focused voluntary pledge in unison, to develop the roadmap towards making their educational institutes- carbon neutral.

Educational Institutes are the centers where youth are bubbling with ideas for a change; a change towards a better future, therefore, recognizing the urgent need, Green TERRE Foundation's ‘Smart Campus Cloud Network’ - SCCN is determined to unleash the high-octane energy of youth in educational institutes. Presently, 250+ universities (and the number is growing) have pledged and are initiating the work on carbon neutrality (SDG 7 and 13).

"By the year 2070, India will achieve the target of Net-Zero" - H.E. Narendra Modi, Hon'ble Prime Minister of India

Why Pledge?

Universities are the centers where youth are bubbling with ideas for a change, change towards the better future.

Recognizing the urgent need, Green TERRE Foundation’s Smart Campus Could Network- SCCN-is determined to unleash the high-octane energy of youth in educational institutes. It is, therefore, launched ‘Not-Zero Net-Zero’ initiative to achieve Carbon Neutrality in University campuses.

Having piloted the actions in some of the Universities, we are now encouraging all the universities in the world to take a pledge of carbon neutrality called ‘Not-Zero Net- Zero’.

Taking pledge is to openly express the determination to follow the advice of the thousands of scientists who are engaged in the IPCC-Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

The underlying principle is not to necessarily make carbon emissions zero but to reduce them to the maximum extent possible and for the rest of emissions create carbon-sink/off-set.
