Beat Plastic Pollution in Campuses

Let us make Difference

"The oceans will house more plastics than fish by 2050", warned the United Nations based on the research presented at World Economic Forum.

Stark reality faced by the world is that only 5% of the plastics are recycled effectively, while 40% end up in landfill and 30% in fragile ecosystems such as, oceans. Much of the remaining is simply burned!

United Nations Environment (UNE) therefore, has strongly advocated the theme of this year's World Environment Day on 5th June, 'Beat Plastic Pollution'. The world is coming together to combat single-use plastic pollution.

One day in advance, on 4th June, TERRE Policy Centre, Pune will be launching the campaign 'Beat Plastic Pollution in Campuses' for a long-lasting impact in the minds of the society and for the sustainable efforts to get rid of toxic plastics.

The campaign will be implemented in education campuses of schools, colleges and universities under the umbrella of 'Smart Campus Cloud Network', which is one of the flagship projects of TERRE.

''By the time Jasprit Bumrah bowls an over in a cricket match, four trucks full of plastic garbage gets dumped into ocean globally,'' says Rajendra Shende, Chairman TERRE Policy Centre and Former Director UNEP. He added, "Where else is the better place to start such campaign than the educational campus. Such formidable challenge of eliminating the toxic and single-use plastic can be fought only by the young, innovative and potentially determined minds in campus''.

Refuse-Reduce-Reuse-Recycle as well as Reimagining (5R) the entrepreneurships would set in the circular economy and transforming Waste to Wealth.

TERRE Policy Centre in association with Hon. Madhuri Sahasrabuddhe – Corporator Pune Municipal Corporation, Mr. Ramdas Kokare – CO Karjat and MIT Group of Institutes of World Peace University are launching a massive and sustained campaign for 'Beat Plastic Pollution in Campuses'.

We invite each school, college and university to register (Please register) to begin the campaign. TERRE and its associate would guide the registered campuses for implementing 5R for plastic pollution.

The active participation of schools and colleges will be a major contribution to beat plastic pollution. Let us make difference.
