Inspiring green campus

  Trendsetter IIT Bombay

The Indian Institute of Technology - Bombay is a public engineering institution, spread over a 220 - hectare sprawl in Powai, Mumbai, India. It is one of Mumbai's greenest and India's cleanest places!

IIT Bombay has been working towards creating a green and sustainable environment. In this wide spread lush green campus, transport becomes a crucial problem, affecting day to day activities.

Few of the sustainable measures carried out by this institution are noteworthy and can be followed by other institutes throughout the nation.

1. Cycle sharing facility: Modes of transport such as autos & buses have been tested but do not fulfill the needs of all students during the time of more usage or even otherwise. Hence, an alternate system is explored to support the existing transportation facilities, by inclusion of a dynamic cycle sharing system. This way, the sanity of this enriched campus is maintained. The use of cycles also create environmental awareness, thus encouraging health and fitness among IIT students and faculty.

  • Highlights of this Cycle Sharing System:
    • Provision of 10 cycles painted in same color – easy way of maintenance.
    • Availability for 16 hostels.
    • Population of 10000 is a part of this system.
    • Cycle stations at frequently visited spots by students and faculty.
    • Cycles are issued by an Android app invented by the Student Council.
    • The app is user friendly and helps to keep a tab on all cycles and indicates the use of this medium of transport.

  • 3. Composting: Vermiculture pit is constructed in faculty housing section. Here, the waste from canteen's mess and hostel gets converted to compost that can be used as manure for landscaping.
  • 4. Biosynth Project: This was led by Chemical Engineering Department students and has been a huge success. A self sustained biodiesel producing plant that converts waste matter from the campus into bio fuel is designed. There is also a Biogas plant within the campus.
  • 5. Heat sensing light: Toilets are designed in such a way that toilet lights are triggered with heat sensors. This way, electricity is conserved on a large scale. Smart way to use natural energy!
  • 6. Solar energy for heating: Solar power is used to heat water in most of the areas in the campus. Good application of solar energy!
  • Definitely, IIT – B is an inspirational campus for all other institutions nation – wide. Small sustainability measures like these go a long way in making campuses smart and eco-friendly. Hope this turns out to be a trend –setter for other universities and colleges!
