The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) is one of the premier institutions in India for higher education in engineering, science, and technology, as well as applied research. Established over 175 years ago, it has been a key contributor to the nation's technical expertise and research. Originally founded in 1847, the institute was designated as an "Institution of National Importance" in 2001, becoming the seventh IIT.

IIT Roorkee offers Bachelor’s degrees in 10 disciplines of Engineering and Architecture, along with Postgraduate degrees in 55 disciplines across Engineering, Applied Science, Architecture, and Planning. The institute also provides doctoral programs in all departments and research centers, making it a leader in advancing both education and research on a global scale.
IIT Roorkee places sustainability at the core of its initiatives, despite its relatively compact 365-acre campus housing over 8,000 students, 450+ faculty, and 1,000 staff. The campus is known for its significant greenery, which is appreciated by visitors.

Faculty and students have led efforts to conserve energy, including an energy audit and policies to reduce electricity consumption. The campus also features solar PV systems for electricity generation and solar thermal systems for cooking and water heating. These systems are equipped with sensors for optimal performance, generating data for further research.
